Accommodation Program

Any Canadian Forces member, first responder or their families who require accommodation in the Vancouver area while their family or themselves are receiving treatment can ask for a referral from a base Military Families Resource Centre, their unit or Regimental Association, Departmental Headquarters or the service officers at any Royal Canadian Legion or Army Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada branch.

Temporary Accommodation Program – Leading hoteliers in Vancouver have generously agreed to provide free accommodation to the families of our troops and first responders who may require a place to stay should Honour House be full.

Veterans Transition Program

The Royal Canadian Legion and UBC Veterans’ Transition Program

The Society supports The Royal Canadian Legion and UBC Veterans’ Transition Program – A group-based program designed to assist former members of the Canadian Forces and the RCMP in their transition to life as a civilian. It provides information and teaches skills to participants who are attempting to better understand their military experience and its impact upon their lives. It also provides participants with the opportunity to engage in action-based ways of dealing with disturbing events from their lives, in or out of military service.

Military Skills Conversion Program

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), Burnaby, BC,
Honour House initiated and continues to support the Military Skills Conversion Program at BCIT.  The program assesses the skills, knowledge, and abilities acquired by service members during training and throughout their service, and looks at how that expertise may be relevant to a civilian career. The program effectively translates military experience into post-secondary equivalencies and credentials. Check out the website: www.bcit.ca/honourhouse

This program has been developed to specifically meet the needs of service members who are returning from deployments or who are otherwise in need of some recognition of their military skills to help them reestablish themselves.

The Institute has completed an assessment of the formal training undergone by soldiers and compared the details to those of programs at BCIT. As part of the program, qualified interviewers identify additional knowledge, skills and aptitudes that service personnel typically obtain during periods of active service.

The program applies the outcome of this process to three areas of assistance:

  • Employment: This component provides assistance in the preparation of CVs and directed self marketing.
  • Post secondary Studies: BCIT has recognized completion of military trades training as equivalent to a diploma for the purposes of enrolling in a post diploma course. This permits an individual, for example, to complete a business diploma in one year instead of the customary two.
  • Business start-up support: BCIT has employed the very successful SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) model to assist individuals in preparing business plans and effective applications for startup capital.
